When you have good access to land you can start to live more and more sustainably. There's obvious advantages and stuff you can do straight away, growing more and more of your own food for example, and less obvious ones, like being able to reduce your waste output dramatically. Access to land can give you many of the materials to build a home and fuel to keep warm. You can allow areas of your land to regenerate their natural diversity and observe how quickly nature can thrive again given half a chance.

Some projects have shown that there is even the potential to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, one of my greatest personal interests as I think this is maybe our biggest hope for regeneration of all Earth life. Once our main needs are met we can start to grow medicinal herbs as part of our post-industrial healthcare and think about making clothes, furniture and all the bits and pieces we use in everyday life. Let's think in a bit more detail about one of my favourite topics, food.
FOOD
There was a period of a few days in the winter of 2017/2018 here in Scotland when the main roads were closed because of snow. It was surprising just how quickly the supermarket shelves emptied. Scotland is producing more and more electricity from renewables but transport is still almost all powered by oil, making us very vulnerable to the weather and to the kind of oil crises that have happened more than once in my lifetime. If you look at what's on those supermarket shelves it's sad to see how little of it is even from Scotland, let alone locally produced. On our One World Future Farm we will be exploring how to produce as much food as we can throughout the year, in terms of variety as well as quantity, and how to store as much as we can too.
