GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS AT PERTH COMMUNITY FARM - March and April 2024

Charlotte Arno and I are putting on two gardening courses at Perth Community Farm - they really are for complete beginners! We'll go over everything you need to know to get started on your gardening adventure, growing healthy tasty food, reducing food miles and waste, and opening up a little window into the wonderful workings of Nature on your back door step.

  • SOWING SEEDS, potting on and planting out.
  • About ANNUAL AND PERENNIAL plants and a bit more general detail about some of the key crops: salads, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes etc
  • BEDS: different kinds of beds, raised beds, no-dig beds, mulching
  • About the different groups of plants - roots, brassicas and so on - and about crop rotation.
  • COMPOSTING: how you can reduce your landfill waste and get a valuable yield.
  • How to use your own-grown plants as a natural, FREE FERTILISER.
  • POLYTUNNELS: find out about things you can grow outside and things for which you really need a polytunnel or greenhouse, and see various different tunnels at the farm.
  • About some of the common pests and problems, and we'll mention some helpful techniques and ideas: eg no-dig (or min dig), companion planting and sq ft gardening.
  • And include some very basic ideas about the importance of woodland, forest gardening, orchard management
  • And also (time permitting!) go into some of the less well known but very helpful ideas out there: eg the permaculture principles, biodynamics
  • Bring sketches and photos of your own garden so we can chat together in the group about possible layouts and how to get the most out of your garden space.
  • PERTH COMMUNITY FARM is a brilliant venue for this as there's such a wide variety of ways of growing things to see, also some well established woodland and an orchard - we'll have a tour round the farm to look at everything.
