SHED MAKING SKILLS - LINKS AND STUFF

SHED MAKING SKILLS - new course at Perth Community Farm

This was a brilliant weekend - great to see people without much experience working together to make a sound structure - then feeling competent to start planning and building their own sheds and extra rooms. Well done everyone!

LINKS

We covered a lot of ground over the weekend, from foundations right up to the roof, here's a few links I promised to post which may be of general interest to practical eco people.

PROTECTING WOODEN POSTS IN THE GROUND

Post Saver the stuff you wrap around posts to protect them

CHARRING - another way - timber posts treated in this way have survived for survived for thousands of years
POST HOLDERS - a variety here
PILLAR FOUNDATIONS - picture here - I like the idea of being able to shim the main beams up in case of subsidence. Leaves a sub space for wiring, plumbing etc...
EARTHSHIPS - store solar energy in thermal mass, maintaining a steady temperature off grid

The Earthship principle of storing solar energy was used very creatively by Simon Dale in his house at the Lammas Eco Village - photos here.
ONDULINE - a good bituminous sheet - NB they will need a sheet of OSB or something underneath them or they will sag and look awful...
MATHS QUICK GUIDE; area = length x breadth, volume = length x breadth x height. NB You must keep your units the same throughout calculation eg 3.2m x 0.6m x 0.125m (metres all the way through)

WHATSAPP GROUP - Friends of the Shed - I set this up so Shed People can share techniques ideas and maybe work together on projects, email me your mobile number and I'll join you up.

Happy shedwork everyone and see you soon, Ian
