This course covers the reals basics to get you started on your gardening adventures, whether you're starting with a windswept concrete slab or acres of overgrown jungle. Find out about sowing seeds, potting up seedlings, propagating from roots and shoots, growing in tunnels and outside, compost making and much more - we'll also look at the basic woodwork you need to make raised beds etc. These are small classes, so we can look at plans and photos from your own gardens and hopefully give you the sort of advice that might save you hours of labour...

LOOK AROUND THE FARM
There's lots for you to see at Perth Community Farm, we're always looking for ways to to make gardening as easy and fun as possible, especially how to keep on top of the weeds. We use various different mulches with great success - they also cut down on how much digging and ground preparation we have to do.

LIVING MULCH
I've not seen this used much, and it takes a little time to set up, but seems very promising. The idea is to grow a carpet of a green manure cover crop, like clover, phacelia or buckwheat, then to plant your main crop into it. As well as suppressing weeds, these will fix nitrogen and the bees love them.

This is one of our vines growing through a cover of buckwheat. On this patch, we sowed the seed onto a mulch of newspaper with new mushroom compost on top. So far so good. |

On this bed we sowed clover directly into the ground and weeded it until the clover was established. Also looking good, the clover is a perennial so this could help for several years. |
